Summary of Specific Mold Characteristics

Fungi

   

Indoor Growth

Alternaria     Can grow indoors on a variety of substances.
Arthrinuim     Found on plants rarely indoors.
Ascospores Found growing on damp substances.
Aspergillus/Penicillium Aspergillus is found on continuously damp wallboard and fabrics. Penicillium is found in house dust and water damaged wallpaper.
Aureobasidium   Found in moisture in bathrooms on grout joints in showers.
Basidiospores     Found in gardens, forests, and woodlands.  They are also agents of dry, white and brown rot.
Bipolaris/Dreschlera     Can grow on a variety of substrates.
Botrytis     Can be found associated with indoor plants.
Chaetomium Can be found on damp sheetrock paper.
Cladosporium     Common outdoor mold that can colonize continuously damp wallboard and fabrics.
Curvularia     Can grow on a variety of subtrates.
Epicoccum     Tends to colonize continuously damp wallboard and fabrics.
Fusarium Can be found on wet materials such a soaked wallboard and water reservoirs for humidifiers and drip pans.
Memnoniella     Can be found growing on cellulose-containing materials.
Nigrospora     Rarely found growing indoors.
Oidium/Peronospora     These are plant pathogens and cannot grow on indoor materials.
Pithomyces/Ulocladium   Pithomyces are rarely found indoors.  Ulocladium colonize continuously damp wallboards and fabrics.
Rusts     Rusts are plant pathogens and only grow on hosts plants.
Smuts/Myxomycetes     Smuts do not usually grow indoors as they require a living host.  Myxomycetes are occasionally found indoors.
Stachybotrys Can be found on wet materials such a soaked wallboard and water reservoirs for humidifiers and drip pans.
Stemphylium     Rarely found growing indoors.
Torula     Can grow on cellulose containing materials.
Unidentified Conidia     An uncharactestic fungal spore that does not lend itself to classification.
